Tom, I did you mean to imply that you were not aware, apologies if I made it sound that way. I guessed that your statement had more to do with a typo or precision, my comment was more aimed at other readers. Your comment sums it all up.

I'm aware of this, and should perhaps have been more precise.

Smallpox was introduced to the area of Mexico known as Veracruz upon the arrival of Panfilo de Narvaez on April 23, 1520, and was indeed credited with the victory of Cortes over the Aztec empire at Tenochtitlan.

Equally catastrophically, however, in the period up to 1527, it spread south and killed, among hundreds of thousands of others, the Inca ruler, Huayna Capac, destroying the Incan Empire.

The history of the Maya is rather different, as by the time of Spanish colonisation the Mayans had no central state or ruling structure. It wasn't until the 17th century, in fact, that the last independent Mayan states came under European control; and their civilization's great decline, in the 8th and 9th centuries, had nothing to do with smallpox.

If smallpox killed millions in Mexico it probably led to the collapse of either the Aztec or Mayan empires, not the Inca empire - mainly because the Incas lived several thousands miles south, in Peru.
