If your so smart Mr Herman....

Who would you have picked instead?

The most conservative squad imaginable? The picking of young players like Bentley, the Villa players would suggest not. Granted these are players that many Premiership fans would put in but what does David want, a smattering of championship players to assuage his desire for novelty.

Not that clever. McClaren dropped Beckham as a media stunt as well. If anything Capello has a much more substantive reason to drop him, in that he has now effectively retired from top-flight football.

The important question is whether England can be brought up to the standard of, say, Scandinavian nations. This may well be easier by concentrating on competent, low-profile players like Gareth Barry and Hargreaves, and restricting the star count to 1 (or if the last world-cup-winning Italian side is anything to go by, 0). Assuming the star in question would be Rooney, it would be time to drop Owen, Lampard, Gerrard and maybe even Ferdinand. Or how about this - make it an eligibility requirement of playing for England that you must earn less than £100k a week. Now that would be a media stunt worth watching.
