In fact, few people believed that he could play again after his injury. It was Scolari who convinced him of working hard to get into shape (Parreira couldn't do the same 4 years after). Also, he won the Libertadores (the South American equivalent of the Champions League), a Brazilian Championship, and a Brazil Cup with a very modest team for Gremio before signing with Palmeiras.
